The Other Four-Letter Word

I know we have all used many different and colorful four letter words in setting up our online businesses, but the one I’m talking about, the most important four letter word you need to know and use, is FREE! Whatever you are selling, providing, promoting or blogging about, offer free gifts to your customers, and watch your traffic and response rates really launch.  Who doesn’t like free stuff?  As I said, it’s of little importance what type of product or service you are marketing, giving away free stuff is a promotional tool and it will build your online credibility.

jumping-jump-editedThere are many things you could give away for free, my preferred gift is an ebook.  In giving away an ebook that is related to your product or service, your advantage is threefold:

1. You generate free publicity for yourself and your website
2. You build online credibility by ensuring your ebook is useful and relevant
3. You now have a good reason to use the word FREE in your advertising campaign

Remember though, the content of your ebook must be relevant to your site and your target market.  Do not give away ebooks about dog-grooming on your site that promotes golf tips.  Common sense right?  Also make sure the ebook is more than just a feeble attempt to promote your stuff.  Relevant material, otherwise you could potentially harm your online reputation.

Internet Business 101 – Back to Basics

So you wanna start an online business…..great!  I think one of the main reasons people are looking in this direction is the freedom it can provide.  Twitter-painted dreams of working an hour or two a day, and making $20K per month sounds more than a little appealing.    An online enterprise can provide you with a recession-proof business which, given the current situation, is another huge benefit.  I have spoken at length about SEO, and how to maximize and monetize your blog or site, but let us take a step back to the beginning.  What you need to realize before you start is that your success probably will not happen overnight.  This is not bad news, chin up, it takes time to build a solid and reputable business.  I know I know, we’ve all seen the capture pages of those who make claims of 6 figures per month, and $1000/day.  I actually do not doubt these claims, but what I do know is that these people failed a lot before they were succssful.  The ones who succeed are those who get back up on that horse and move forward, learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others.  Did you know that Einstein was a shunned laughing stock when he came up with the theory of relativity?  Did you know that Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team?  Wha?!  Yes, it’s true.  People also used to believe the sun revolved around the flat earth.  The point I’m trying to make is that you’re going to have to experiment with your business.  Learn what works and what does not, your business will evolve and you will get better and better at running it.  Check out this video……..

Generating Free Website Traffic

The first step to driving massive traffic to your site is understanding the difference between traffic and targeted traffic.  You only want targeted traffic visiting your site or you’ll get loads of ‘tire-kickers’ who may look around, but rarely purchase your product or service.  Targeted traffic consists of visitors who are already interested in your niche market.  Having highly targeted traffic will increase your conversions exponentially.

So, you want to promote your website, but don’t want to spend a lot of money.  Truth is, the strategies explained below, are not only free but they are some of the most effective ways to getting that targeted traffic.

  • Ezines. These are free, although it may take some time to build a good list of subscribers.  If there is one thing I have learned, it is patience, and you should too.  Your ezine should be of relevance to the topic of your website, and should give readers lots of information.  The more you contribute about a particular topic, the sooner you will be regarded as an expert….take it from the expert.
  • Article Marketing. Positive changes are abundant when using the article marketing method.  This is a terrific strategy for increasing targeted traffic to your site and seeing a rise in profits.  Be sure to write quality articles with good and unique content.  They need to focus directly on your niche market, just as I mentioned above, relevant content speaking directly to the niche of your website.  It’s also important to learn the importance of keywords when writing your articles, and use them effectively.  There are many free resources where you can submit articles, and in doing so regularly, publishers may want to use your information in their publications…nice!
  • Viral Marketing. One of the best ways to get more traffic to your site is by giving out freebies.  Most consumers will stampede if you’re giving something away.  Chances are, they will let lots of people know about this, and so on.  It is kind of like the equivalent of word-of mouth advertising.
  • RSS. This stands for Really Simple Syndication.  If you have a blog, then using RSS feeds has become an invaluable tool in getting traffic.  Input some RSS feeds into your blog and watch the targeted traffic come flowing in.  If you’re not sure how to do this, I’m sure whatever service you use to post has information on how to add it to your blog, it’s really simple.
  • SEO. You need to learn the importance of search engine optimization and how it works.  Search engines rule, and you have to know how to optimize your site in order to get your pages noticed.  I go into this deeper in other posts.

Getting targeted traffic to your site is a continuous process that you will have to maintian.  Experiment with different methods, but don’t lose hope if you try one and it doesn’t work as well as you’d hoped.  Good things take time, exercise patience and determination and you will see results.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) & Why You Need It

It goes without saying, that the internet has revolutionized the way we live our lives.  I won’t go into how, I think it’s pretty clear, but obviously it has changed the way we do business.  Having said that, many people are striving to merely get noticed on the world wide web.  So how does one go about getting their site past the multitudes of others and be recognized by their target audience?

Search engine optimization – hereon referred to as SEO – aims to help you get more traffic to your site, by aiding it in getting a higher ranking.  A high-ranking site ensures you will be among the top results when using a search engine to find a product.

Two methods exist to help you get recognized by search engines; Pay-per-click advertising is one.  Google Adwords is a perfect example of this.  Here, you can place bids on their ads to be shown when a keyword is searched and is relevant to your site.  Quite simply, the highest bidder gets the higher page ranking.  Some people spend a small fortune on this, but can be worth it if your site has a high conversion rate.

Organic searches is the second technique.  Your site ranking is evaluated by ‘spiders’ which scan sites and gather information about them.  They use the information and pass it on to the search engine, which will list the websites based on ranking determined by the spiders.  It’s important to have good relevant content on your site, or your ranking will be lower.

Do not underestimate the power of search engines, it is one of the fundamental concepts of the internet.  A recent poll revealed that 90% of web surfers use search engines to help them find what they are looking for.  Do you know how to use the Google on the internet machine?

SEO is vital for the success of your website.  It determines the position of your site in relation to your competitors.  It generates traffic from target audiences, but more importantly, it’s a cost-effective way of promoting your website.

Social Networking Vital To Online Success

If you operate your own website, and you are trying to make money, then you need to know just how important social networking is.  With literally millions of people subscribing to MySpace and Facebook – just to name a couple – this has become an excellent way to promote your online enterprise.  For those of you that don’t know what I’m talking about, a social network is an online community that gives users the opportunity to chat, share and connect with friends – but maybe more importantly, to connect with other like-minded people who might either be interested in the product or service you’re offering, or even to share ideas and bounce things off each other.  Rest assured, there are people out there who know a lot more than you do about website promotion, writing ad copy, generating traffic, or whatever the obstacle you might be facing.

On these social network sites, you can meet these people by joining groups in whatever area of online business you are trying to master.  It’s been my experience, that everyone is more than willing to offer suggestions, provide you with links, or introduce you to other people who can help.  Having said that, perhaps you’ll be the one helping out someone who is just starting out, and in need of some of your advice or expertise.  The point is, once in, you’ll be exposed to innumerable people and resources that will do nothing but aid you in your quest for online success.  Did I mention that your website would now be exposed to these millions of people?  Hello!  Did I also mention that these sites are FREE to join?  Wow!  It is remarkably simple to create a profile, where, you’ll be able to post a link to your site…free.

If you haven’t researched this yet, get started now.  Social networking is exploding in popularity, and you need to be on the inside.
