The Other Four-Letter Word

I know we have all used many different and colorful four letter words in setting up our online businesses, but the one I’m talking about, the most important four letter word you need to know and use, is FREE! Whatever you are selling, providing, promoting or blogging about, offer free gifts to your customers, and watch your traffic and response rates really launch.  Who doesn’t like free stuff?  As I said, it’s of little importance what type of product or service you are marketing, giving away free stuff is a promotional tool and it will build your online credibility.

jumping-jump-editedThere are many things you could give away for free, my preferred gift is an ebook.  In giving away an ebook that is related to your product or service, your advantage is threefold:

1. You generate free publicity for yourself and your website
2. You build online credibility by ensuring your ebook is useful and relevant
3. You now have a good reason to use the word FREE in your advertising campaign

Remember though, the content of your ebook must be relevant to your site and your target market.  Do not give away ebooks about dog-grooming on your site that promotes golf tips.  Common sense right?  Also make sure the ebook is more than just a feeble attempt to promote your stuff.  Relevant material, otherwise you could potentially harm your online reputation.

Generating Free Website Traffic

The first step to driving massive traffic to your site is understanding the difference between traffic and targeted traffic.  You only want targeted traffic visiting your site or you’ll get loads of ‘tire-kickers’ who may look around, but rarely purchase your product or service.  Targeted traffic consists of visitors who are already interested in your niche market.  Having highly targeted traffic will increase your conversions exponentially.

So, you want to promote your website, but don’t want to spend a lot of money.  Truth is, the strategies explained below, are not only free but they are some of the most effective ways to getting that targeted traffic.

  • Ezines. These are free, although it may take some time to build a good list of subscribers.  If there is one thing I have learned, it is patience, and you should too.  Your ezine should be of relevance to the topic of your website, and should give readers lots of information.  The more you contribute about a particular topic, the sooner you will be regarded as an expert….take it from the expert.
  • Article Marketing. Positive changes are abundant when using the article marketing method.  This is a terrific strategy for increasing targeted traffic to your site and seeing a rise in profits.  Be sure to write quality articles with good and unique content.  They need to focus directly on your niche market, just as I mentioned above, relevant content speaking directly to the niche of your website.  It’s also important to learn the importance of keywords when writing your articles, and use them effectively.  There are many free resources where you can submit articles, and in doing so regularly, publishers may want to use your information in their publications…nice!
  • Viral Marketing. One of the best ways to get more traffic to your site is by giving out freebies.  Most consumers will stampede if you’re giving something away.  Chances are, they will let lots of people know about this, and so on.  It is kind of like the equivalent of word-of mouth advertising.
  • RSS. This stands for Really Simple Syndication.  If you have a blog, then using RSS feeds has become an invaluable tool in getting traffic.  Input some RSS feeds into your blog and watch the targeted traffic come flowing in.  If you’re not sure how to do this, I’m sure whatever service you use to post has information on how to add it to your blog, it’s really simple.
  • SEO. You need to learn the importance of search engine optimization and how it works.  Search engines rule, and you have to know how to optimize your site in order to get your pages noticed.  I go into this deeper in other posts.

Getting targeted traffic to your site is a continuous process that you will have to maintian.  Experiment with different methods, but don’t lose hope if you try one and it doesn’t work as well as you’d hoped.  Good things take time, exercise patience and determination and you will see results.
